Carlos Tevez Joins Manchester City

Details of this summer's most controversial transfer

Carlos Tevez has finally put pen to paper on a five-year deal to join Manchester City, having left rival Manchester United in June.

The deal came after United dragged their feet over offering Tevez a permanent deal following a two year loan with the reds, allowing City time to negotiate a contract and snap up the Argentinean international.

Tevez Quits Man United

Carlos Tevez's decision to quit Man United for Man City turned out to be an easy one. The striker had become increasingly frustrated at United's failure to tie him down to a long term contract and was feeling less and less appreciated by manager Sir Alex Ferguson as time went on.

Tevez had been pleading with Ferguson to sort out his future from before Christmas last year. However United, who carry a considerable debt, were initially reluctant to meet the £25 million transfer fee required to purchase his contract from Kia Joorabchian, the man who owned his contract.

As United were mulling over the fee, across Manchester, City were planning to blow United out the water by preparing an offer that Tevez couldn't refuse.

Tevez Rejects United, Agrees City Contract

As the 2008/09 Premiership season came to an end with United claiming the title, still no offer had been made by the club to keep Tevez in a red shirt.

However, United did eventually offer Tevez a permanent five year deal with the club in June only to be surprisingly rebuffed by their now fed up striker. It appeared the offer was simply too little too late as Tevez had now begun considering offers from other clubs having felt United were simply not serious enough about keeping him.

Although there were said to be offers from other big clubs such as Chelsea, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Inter Milan, none seemed as vocal about their interest as Manchester City. The club were making it public knowledge that they wanted Tevez as their new star striker and were willing to pay handsomely to do so.

In the end, the offer of a huge contract and regular first team football seemed to turn Tevez's head towards the blue side of Manchester and a deal was eventually done to take him from United to City.

Tevez to Become Man City Star

Carlos Tevez can now look forward to becoming a star striker at Manchester City - a factor that proved pivotal in his decision to leave United.

While at United, Carlos Tevez was reportedly unhappy at the lack of starts he was getting in United's big Premiership and Champions League games. Although he was often brought on as a sub in those games, Ferguson appeared to favour a front trio of Ronaldo, Rooney and Berbatov - meaning Tevez's starts were limited to smaller profile league games or when one of the trio were injured or suspended.

Part of City's selling point to Tevez was their ambition to break into the Champions League and challenge for honours, but more importantly, that he would play a major role in that progression. Combine that ambition with a huge salary and it is easy to see why Tevez made the move and his record of 34 goals in 98 games for United seem to highlight his star potential.

Tevez Becomes Third Signing for Man City

Carlos Tevez has become Man City's third summer signing and pushes the clubs spending past the £50 million mark.

Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz and Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry have already made the move and Tevez's signing has become the latest piece in City's ambitious puzzle.

The spending is unlikely to end there though. Manchester City have high expectations and extremely deep pockets and are ready to spend what is necessary to make them the biggest club in Europe.
