Coca-Cola Championship Results in England for 21A Round-up of Results in the English Championship
Birmingham regain top spot with a late, late goal as Norwich crash five past Wolves.
Elsewhere Barnsley’s win is not enough to lift them out the relegation places whilst Forest end their run of four successive defeats. Barnsley 2 Sheffield Wednesday 1 Barnsley sealed the points in an entertaining Yorkshire derby at Oakwell. They took the lead as early as the 4th minute through an Iain Hume strike. Thirty minutes later Wednesday were reduced to ten men after Tommy McMahon was dismissed for a two footed lunge on the Barnsley goal scorer. Jamal Campbell-Ryce doubled the lead just after the hour mark before Leon Clarke pulled one back from the penalty spot. Birmingham 1 Crystal Palace 0 Gary O’Connor scored a late, late goal to grab all three points for Birmingham and take them back to the top of the table. It was no more than the home side deserved, but it took them until the 4th minute of injury time to break down a stubborn Palace defence. Blackpool 3 Derby 2 Derby’s seven match unbeaten run came to an end in a five goal thriller at Blackpool. The home side took a two goal lead with strikes from Alan Gow and Gary Taylor-Fletcher, but Kris Commons first goal for the Rams threatened a comeback. Ben Burgess secured the points with a 65th minute strike despite a 77th minute reply from Mile Sterjovski. Charlton 0 Bristol City 2 Lee Trundle scored his first goal in six games to set Bristol city on their way to victory. The home side never really got to grips with the game and were punished by a superb curling left footed strike by Gavin Williams shortly after the restart. Coventry 1 Burnley 3 Burnley came from behind to secure all three points at the Ricoh Arena. Elliot Ward gave Coventry the lead from the penalty spot, but second half goals from Michael Duff, Robbie Blake and a stunning third by Chris Eagles on the stroke of full time gave the visitors a well earned victory. Norwich 5 Wolverhampton 2 Leroy Lita hit a hat-trick as Norwich registered only their second home win of the season with a five goal thumping of table toppers, Wolves. A horror mistake from Wolves keeper Carl Ikeme gave them the lead and they were further ahead after 39 minutes when Lita doubled their lead. Neil Collins pulled one back just before half time to bring Wolves back in it, but Lita struck two more in the second half to kill of any hopes of rescuing the points. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake pulled another one back for the visitors, but Lee Croft settled matter in the 75th minute after Lita’s shot came back off the post. Richard Stearman was dismissed for a second bookable offence with twenty minutes left to play. Nottingham Forest 1 Ipswich 1 Forest ended their run of four straight defeats with a first half strike from Gareth McCleary, but couldn‘t hold out for a win. The points were shared when Tommy Miller equalised from the penalty spot after Paul Anderson brought down Alan Quinn. Plymouth 1 Preston 0 A Rory Fallon strike in the 18th minute was enough to earn Plymouth all three points against a lacklustre Preston side. The win takes them above their opponents in the table. Reading 2 Doncaster 1 Reading were almost left to rue a host of missed second half chances when Jos Van Nieuwstadt rose at the near post to head home an equaliser from James Coppinger’s cross. Andre Bikey had given the league’s top scorers an 18th minute lead before Doncaster struck, but Kevin Doyle grabbed his ninth goal of the season to save his sides blushes. Sheffield Utd 0 Southampton 0 Southampton somehow salvaged a point with a visit to Bramall Lane. Sheffield United dominated proceedings, but were unable to break the deadlock and had to settle for a point. Saints Oliver Lancashire was sent off for second time this season minutes before the final whistle. Swansea 0 QPR 0 Swansea defender Alan Tate was forced to keep goal when keeper Dorus De Vries was stretched off in the 27th minute. Roberto Martinez didn’t have a recognised keeper on the substitutes bench, but his side managed to keep a clean sheet. Watford 2 Cardiff 2 Watford threw away a two goal lead after Tamas Priskin was dismissed for violent conduct in an off-the-ball incident. Goals from John Joe O’Toole and Will Hoskins had given the home side a two goal cushion, but goals from Jay Bothroyd in the second half evened things up. It could have been worse for the Hornets had keeper Richard Lee not saved his third penalty in two games to deny Ross McCormack.
