The 2009/10 English Premier League (EPL) will start on Saturday 15 August 2009 and the fixtures for the forthcoming season have been announced. EPL champions Manchester United begin at home to newly promoted Birmingham City. Fixtures for the remaining three of the 'Big Four' will see Chelsea at home to Hull City, Liverpool visit Tottenham and Arsenal travel to Goodison Park to play Everton.

Surprise promotion winners Burnley will kick off their campaign with a visit to Stoke City with Wolverhampton Wanderers celebrating their return to the top flight by welcoming West Ham United to Molineux.

Premier League Opening Day Fixtures

Aston Villa v Wigan Athletic

Aston Villa will hope to build on a successful 2008/09 and begin by entertaining Wigan Athletic at Villa Park. Martin O'Neill's side will again be looking for a top six premier league finish. New Wigan boss, Roberto Martinez, will be looking to impose his passing style on his new charges but faces a testing baptism on the opening day.

Blackburn v Manchester City

Big spenders Manchester City visit Blackburn Rovers in a North West derby. A pivotal season for City and boss Mark Hughes as they push for greater success to reward their owners massive financial investment. Blackburn will be hoping for a season free from relegation worry and Sam Allardyce would probably settle for a mid table finish this term.

Bolton v Sunderland

Bolton continue to achieve above expectation and are always testing opponents at the Reebok Stadium. With new boss Steve Bruce in charge at Sunderland, the Wearsiders will be expecting a far better season that the relegation haunted campaign endured in 2008/09.

Chelsea v Hull City

Carlo Ancelotti's first game as manager of Chelsea sees the visit of Hull City. Guus Hiddink will be a hard act to follow and a good, confident start will be essential to gain the confidence of players and supporters alike. It may well be a testing season for Hull City. They escaped relegation last year on the final day and will be strong favourites for the drop this time around.

Everton v Arsenal

David Moyes and Arsene Wenger tangle at Goodison Park. Everton enjoyed a highly successful last season and will be as well organised and committed as ever. Arsenal fans will be looking for promise to turn to delivery in the coming season with even the impregnable Wenger under pressure to win a trophy.

Manchester United v Birmingham City

Manchester United begin their post Ronaldo existence with a game against newly promoted Birmingham City. It will be hard for United to meet ever growing expectations but they will once again undoubtedly challenge in all competitions. It couldn't be a tougher start for Birmingham City, but they can at least be reassured that one of their hardest games is out of the way on the opening day of the season.

Portsmouth v Fulham

Portsmouth have suffered a troubled twelve months and will be hoping for stability above all else in the forthcoming season. It will very hard for Fulham to emulate the wonderful achievements of last year. Roy Hodgson achieved wonders in his first full season in charge and even a close repeat would be warmly welcomed.

Stoke City v Burnley

The surprise promotion winners of the last two seasons meet at the Britannia Stadium. If Burnley can match the very impressive achievements of Stoke City, who maintained their premiership status with ease, they will be more than pleased with their first season in the premiership.

Tottenham v Liverpool

It will be hard for Tottenham to have as poor a start to this campaign as they experienced last year. Harry Redknapp will be expecting his large squad to deliver at least a European place this time around. Liverpool ran United close last year and their supporters will be expecting a determined and sustained title challenge this season

Wolverhampton Wanderers v West Ham United

Molineux sees the return of top flight football with West Ham United visiting Wolves. Mick McCarthy would no doubt already settle for fourth from bottom while Gianfraco Zola will be looking for his young side to build on their fine efforts of last season.

English Premier League 2009/10

The forthcoming season will again be dominated by the usual suspects with the title being lifted by one of Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea or Arsenal. Manchester City and Tottenham will be looking for radical improvement but the most interesting battles, as is often the case, may occur at the foot of the table among the scrappers looking to avoid the dreaded drop. As ever though, the English Premier League will followed avidly around the football world.
