Ferguson Attacks Benitez

United Manager Takes Swipe at Liverpool Boss

Apr 17, 2009 Philip O'Neill

Rafa Benitez has come under fire from Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce for his celebrations following Liverpool's second goal against Rovers last weekend.

The former Bolton bos has accused his Anfield counterpart of being 'disrespectful' and 'humiliating' following Fernando Torres’ first half header that put the Reds 2-0 up.

The Spaniard appeared to make gestures as though the goal had killed off Blackburn and the game was up despite the match not having reached half-time.

Allardyce has also claimed that he waited in Rafa’s room after the game to seek an explanation for these gestures but intimated that not only did Benitez fail to even show to speak to his fellow manager but that this was a usual occurance.

Ill Advised Gestures

The gestures made by Benitez, while ambiguous, did appear ill advised and quite out of character for the Liverpool boss who rarely displays any emotion after his team scored.

However, was it not disrespectful of Allardyce to insist in his pre-match conference that the Spanish tactician, who he has been at loggerheads with since 2004, “enjoys moaning and complaining”?

The man they call ’Big Sam’ is very much the marmite of football, people either love or hate him. His style of football is not easy on the eye yet can be very effective but whatever your opinion on Allardyce he had a right to say how and why he was offended by Benitez’ actions. Sir Alex Ferguson, however, did not.

Ferguson Adds Fuel

Ferguson has embroiled himself in the argument by launching an impassioned defence of Allardyce, calling Benitez arrogant and accusing him of ‘contempt’ towards a fellow Premier League manager.

The fact is that Benitez does have more than a hint of arrogance about him, what great manager doesn’t? However to hear it from arguably the most arrogant and disrespectful man in football could be deemed laughable.

Is this the same man who shows a complete contempt for the game and his own fans by refusing to conduct post match interviews after his side get beat, instead sending out his right hand man? (Liverpool and Fulham spring to mind recently and not just for the BBC, he refused to face Sky cameras too!)

Is this the same man who in the mid-nineties intimated that Stuart Pearce (at the time in caretaker charge of Nottingham Forest) and Leeds would lie down and allow Newcastle to beat them to stop United winning the title?

Fergusons list of contemptuous and disrespectful behaviour goes on and on and on throughout an illustrious career in which upsetting his peers has been the bottom of his priority list.

Fear

‘Sir Alex’ does it and its called mind games anyone else does it and it’s disrespectful to a fellow manager. It could be deemed laughable until you actually read between the lines. Has a fellow manager finally rattled the United chief?

Only time will tell.

It's not about Reds fans or even the title race, it is about a planned dual attack by Fat Head and Whiskey nose to try shake Benitez. But mind games it is not, it would have been had Ferguson no used the word contempt. He is too hypocritical given his record of condesending and walking all over people. Mind games and banter is one thing but to be such a hypocrite is just laughable as Phil puts it! And by the way i'm a Sunderland fan.
