Premier League Players To Watch This Season

Ten Gems To Look Out For Througout The 09/10 Campaign

Aug 14, 2009 Matt Haynes

Last season many players raised their game, and performed to a very high standard. Below are just a few who it can be assumed will grace the premier league this year.

Andrei Arshavin

After taking only a couple of months to settle in at the Emirates Stadium, the Russian playmaker finished the season in fine form. He has the potential to be better than Arsenal legend Robert Pires, and he will score as many goals as he creates. A definite player of the season contender.

Eduardo Da Silva

Huge things are expected from this lad. His ability to score goals from inside the penalty area is unrivalled, and he is potentially the most natural finisher in the Premier League. If he can strike up an effective partnership with Robin Van Persie, and Andrei Arshavin, he will score plenty of goals.

Dimitar Berbatov

Since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, much of the talk has been about Wayne Rooney, and what a great signing Michael Owen will be. That may be the case, but we haven't seen the best of Dimitar Berbatov yet, and with Sir Alex Ferguson promising to play him in a strike force of two, rather than deep in an attacking three, he will score alot of goals this season, and he will be essential in Manchester United's quest for a fourth successive title.

Didier Drogba

After being plagued by injuries last season, and having to watch Nicolas Anelka collect the Golden Boot, the Ivory Coast striker will be determined to prove his critics wrong. Carlo Ancelotti is more than capable of nurturing him back to his best, and he is well worth a bet for top goal scorer this season.

Ashley Young

It will be interesting to see whether Ashley Young can emulate his performances from last season. The Young Player Of The Season flourished for Aston Villa last term, with his contributions leading Villa to their highest ever Premier League finish. It is a big year for the talented winger who will have to further raise his game if he is to be selected by Fabio Capello for the England World Cup squad.

Stephen Ireland

A product of the Manchester City youth team, he was perhaps their most consistent player last season, outshining the likes of Robinho. He will be grateful for the help of Gareth Barry in midfield, and the duo could forge an effective partnership. In time he could become as good as Frank Lampard.

Luka Modric

He took a while to settle in to the Tottenham side last season, but is now conceivably their most important player. Blessed with great vision, an all-round passing ability, and intelligent movement off the ball, Spurs will struggle to keep hold of him if he performs to his potential this season.

Glen Johnson

This is a make or break season for Glen Johnson, who has to justify another enormous transfer fee. He has shown that he can play superbly for mediocre teams, though he needs to be able to handle the pressure of playing well for a club of Liverpool's stature. If he performs like he did last season, he won't look back and will deserve a starting place in the England World Cup squad.

Ben Foster

A fantastic talent, who needs to be given chances at Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson has to trust his own judgement and let him play more, in a season which could be transitional for the goalkeeping hierarchy at Old Trafford. Ben Foster should be aiming to cement his place in the team, and if he performs to his potential he could start for England next summer.

Steven Gerrard

He was outstanding for Liverpool last season, and Rafa Benitez will be hoping his Captain fantastic can raise his game further, as they prepare to challenge for the title again. It is fundamental to Liverpool's chances that he stays fit, because without him Fernando Torres won't be nearly as potent. This year could be his best, as he looks to lead the Reds to that coveted Premier League trophy, and win the World Cup with England.
