Both sides of the Old Firm recorded crucial wins on Saturday to move into the top two spots in the SPL table.

Saturday 13th September 2008

Aberdeen 1 Hamilton 2 (HT 1-1)

Young star James McCarthy scored the winner for Accies to keep up their impressive early season form. Aberdeen midfielder Gary McDonald had put the home side ahead in the seventh minute with his first goal for the club, but David Graham scored a spectacular equaliser against the run of play after 34 minutes. It was Hamilton's first win at Pittodrie for 77 years.

Falkirk 2 Hearts 1 (HT 1-0)

The Bairns secured their first points of the SPL season thanks to Scott Arfield's late strike. Former Hearts midfielder Neil McCann had given Falkirk a third minute lead only to be cancelled out by Michael Stewart's equaliser after 71 minutes. Arfield and Falkirk had other ideas though, and when the talented playmaker scored from 18 yards, Falkirk's first win was confirmed.

Hibernian 2 Dundee United 1 (HT 1-1)

Returning hero Derek Riordan received a standing ovation as Hibs continued Dundee United's misery with victory in this Easter Road clash. Stephen Fletcher's double for Hibernian secured the points while Lee Wilkie had put United level just before half-time. The tangerines continue to search for their first win of the season and remain rooted to the bottom of the table on two points.

Inverness CT 1 St. Mirren 2 (HT 1-0)

Garry Brady's first goal of the season gave St. Mirren their first victory of the season after 5 attempts. Inverness took the lead in the 43rd minute through Adam Rooney's penalty. When Billy Mehmet drew Saints level on the hour mark they grew in confidence, and when Brady duly converted Stephen McGinn's superb cross, Saints were on the road to victory.

Motherwell 2 Celtic 4 (HT 0-0)

In a reversal of the Old Firm result, Celtic got back to winning ways on their travels at Motherwell. Goals from Shaun Maloney, Giorgios Samaras (2) and Scott McDonald by the 41st minute set the hoops up for an important win. Consolation strikes from John Sutton and David Clarkson in the second half took a bad look off the final scoreline for 'Well.

Rangers 2 Kilmarnock 1 (HT 0-1)

Kris Boyd saved Rangers' blushes as they came from behind to defeat second placed Kilmarnock by a narrow margin at Ibrox. Frazer Wright outjumped Allan McGregor to put Killie ahead after nine minutes, and the home support was silenced. Boyd's double against his former club claimed the points, but a hard-fought contest saw Sasa Papac being sent off before the final whistle.
