SPL Results - Week 6

Old Firm Retain Pole Position in the League Title Race

Sep 24, 2008 Cathal Coyle

The SPL table has a familiar look about it with Celtic and Rangers assuming the top two positions following victories against Kilmarnock and Motherwell respectively.

The Old Firm moved onwards in their pursuit of the SPL Championship for 2008-2009, with Hearts in close pursuit following a home win against Inverness. Meanwhile Falkirk find themselves at the foot of the table with just four points accumulated from the first six games. The latest results are:

Aberdeen 0 Dundee United 1 (HT 0-0)

Francisco Sandaza's penalty kick in the 46th minute gave United their first win of the season. Tommy Wright handled Craig Conway's corner, and Sandaza made no mistake from the spot. It was the Arabs' first SPL win in 13 games and lifts the pressure on manager Craig Levein who admitted "it was an error that won it for us, but I just don't care".

Hamilton 0 Hibernian 1 (HT 0-1)

Returning hero Derek Riordan scored a sweet strike from 18 yards shortly after coming on as a substitute. It was a good day's work for the striker after an indifferent spell at Celtic, and according to manager Mixu Paateleinen, Riordan "is always looking to score, from anywhere on the pitch".

Hearts 1 Inverness Caledonian Thistle 0 (HT 1-0)

An early goal in the eighth minute from Lithuanian international Saulius Mikoliunas was enough to give Hearts a home win and keep up the pressure on leaders Rangers. The result temporarily put Hearts into second place before Celtic's trip to Rugby Park.

Kilmarnock 1 Celtic 3 (HT 0-1)

A stunning opener from Shaun Maloney and a superb double from Giorgios Samaras helped Celtic to an important away win at Rugby Park. In a entertaining game of three penalties, four goals and one sending off, Taouil scored a consolation penalty for Killie following Celtic defender Gary Caldwell's dismissal.

Rangers 2 Motherwell 1 (HT 0-0)

Rangers remain in pole position following another routine win at Ibrox. Second half goals by Steve Davis (57 minutes) and Nacho Novo (76 minutes) had the light blues in control, but a late rally by Motherwell saw David Clarkson score a consolation on 87 minutes. Rangers had done enough, however, to secure the points.

St. Mirren 1 Falkirk 1 (HT 0-0)

Two goals in a four minute burst shortly after half-time saw an absorbing contest end in stalemate as Billy Mehmet's 50th minute penalty cancelled out Graham Barrett's opener for Falkirk. Despite the valiant efforts of both sides, a point apiece was the final outcome.

Next Week's Fixtures are as follows:

Saturday September 27th:

Celtic v Aberdeen

Dundee United v Hearts

Falkirk v Hamilton Academicals

Inverness CT v Kilmarnock

Motherwell v St. Mirren

Sunday September 28th:
