Results of the English Premiership games that settled the outstanding issues at the end of the season - relegation and UEFA Cup qualification. West Ham United survived.

Blackburn Rovers 3 Reading 3 (H.T. 1-1)

A see-saw game that saw Reading come back three times to level the scores and miss out on UEFA Cup qualification when a late goal was disallowed.

Scorers:

Blackburn: Benni McCarthy, David Bentley and Matt Derbyshire

Reading: Seol Ki-Hyeon, Kevin Doyle, Brynjar Gunnarsson

Bolton Wanderers 2 Aston Villa 2 (H.T. 1-1)

Bolton earned the point that assured them of UEFA Cup football by finishing in seventh place in the Premiership. Bolton led twice but Villa equalised.

Bolton: Gary Speed, Kevin Davies

Aston Villa: Craig Gardner, Luke Young

Chelsea 1 Everton 1 (H.T. 0-0)

Chelsea maintained their unbeaten home record by coming from behind to equalise. Everton finished sixth behind Spurs who moved above them with a home win.

Chelsea: Didier Drogba

Everton: James Vaughan

Liverpool 2 Charlton Athletic 2 (H.T. 0-1)

Charlton took the lead after three minutes and held on until the second half but then regained the lead before Liverpool equalised with a penalty. Robbie Fowler played his final game for Liverpool.

Liverpool: Alonso, Harry Kewell (p)

Charlton: Matt Holland, Darren Bent

Manchester United 0 West Ham United 1 (H.T. 0-1)

Manchester United started the game with Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Daniel Akker on the substitutes bench. United dominated the first half but in added time West Ham needing a point to be certain of survival, scored on the break through their controversial Argentine, Carlos Trevez. In the second half even after adding Ronaldo, Giggs and scholes United were unable to score and West Ham had completed the ‘double’ over the Champions and avoided relegation.

Middlesbrough 3 Fulham 1 (H.T. 2-1)

Middlesbrough went ahead only for Fulham to equalise but Boro regained the lead before half-time and Mark Viduka’s second goal ensured victory over the visitors with only one away victory all season. Middlesbrough finished one place and three points ahead of Newcastle United.

Fulham: Simon Davies

Sheffield United 1 Wigan Athletic 2 (H.T. 1-2)

The most dramatic game of the day with both teams battling to avoid relegation. Wigan took an early lead with Sheffield United equalising before half-time. However, a penalty to Wigan in added time game them the three points to move ahead of their opponents on goal difference. Much excitement continued in the second half, United hit the post and Wigan had a player sent off. With one goal advantage over Sheffield United, Wigan retained their Premiership status.

Wigan: Paul Scharner, David Unsworth (p)

Tottenham Hotspur 2 Manchester City 1 (H.T. 2-1)

A typical Spurs’ performance – score twice within half an hour and then let the other team score and hold on to the end. The win took Spurs to fifth and UEFA Cup football.

Spurs: Robbie Keane, Dimitar Berbatov

City: Emile Mpenza

Watford 1 Newcastle United 1 (H.T. 0-1)

Newcastle took the lead after half an hour but Watford levelled early in the second half. The most noteworthy event was Michael Owen being carried off with a facial injury having taken a shot from Nicky Butt on the face. England manager, Steve McClaren was there to assess his chances of playing in the up-coming internationals.
